uP uP and AwAy

Rowan Class have chosen to read Valerie Thomas as their focus author this term and our book corner is full of stories about Winnie and her cat Wilbur.  So far we have read Winnie the Witch, Winnies' Magic Wand, Winnie's Pirate Adventure and Winnie in Space.  Today we read Winnie Flies Again and what a crazy adventure Winnie and Wilbur had - flying around, crashing into things.

Rowan Class were laughing their socks off every time something new happened to Wilbur or Winnie.  Darcey especially liked the bit when Winnie was hanging onto the tree, but Ollie Elson preferred the part when they fell underground.  Christian thought it was funny when Wilbur lost some of his fur, but some children were worried that he might get cold!

We hope you enjoy the story and if you have any Winnie the Witch stories at home, don't forget to bring them in so we can read those too.  

Letters and Sounds Drop in.

Hi Mums, Dads, Nans, Grandads and all responsible guardians out there!

 I think the weather scared a lot of people away from our 'Letters and Sounds' drop in this afternoon but fear not...I have homework for you!
You will see a video clip 'Letters and Sounds Articulation' at the top right of this blog page (Its on the template so is always there). If you listen to it you can hear how each letter and blend of letters are pronounced as a sound. It is very different from when we were at school so please take the time to have a listen. Pronouncing the sounds correctly with your child really helps them learn to read and spell quickly.

We teach the letter sounds with 'Jollyphonic songs/actions' I have found a youtube video which shows you these so you can sing along at home too :-) !

The Gruffalo!

Having had such a wonderful time looking for signs of Autumn, we thought we would read a story based in the deep dark wood!

"The Gruffalo is scary. He's got sharp claws and purple on his back and a tail, sharp teeth and orange eyes" (Jamie)

"I like the bit with the mouse and the Gruffalo. That's a really funny bit!" (Elijah)

"I really don't like this bit cause it's really scary!" (When the mouse met the Gruffalo) (Louie)

"I liked the bit when the mouse saw the Gruffalo and the Gruffalo saw the mouse!" (Meadow)

David McKee is the Author we are focusing on this term.
If you visit the library or have books at home see if you can find a David McKee story to bring in and share with us!

David McKee

David McKee's first book was published in 1964. His books are now published in many languages throughout the world, and many of them have been adapted for television.

As well as his own books, which include the popular best-selling Elmer series, David illustrates for a number of other writers including Michael Bond's Paddington Bear and Forrest Wilson's SuperGran books.

The Rhyming Rabbit

This term, the Nursery are going to have a focus on Julia Donaldson books during some of our story time sessions. 

Recently, we have have been thinking about vegetable gardens and the little rabbits that might visit them, so we thought 'The Rhyming Rabbit' would be a good story to start with!

Here are a few of the children's thoughts . . .

"I liked the first bit because the rabbit did sing to them" (Ava S)

"I think the fox is hungry and he's going to eat the rabbits!" (Cody)

"The rabbits are going in the hole so the fox can't see them" (Noah)

The Rhyming Rabbit met a sheep in the story - when we got to that part, Evie suggested we could sing Baa Baa Black Sheep - and so that's what we did when we finished the book!

Willow Class are enjoying David McKee books this term!

The author we are focusing on this term is David McKee.

Today we shared our first story - 'I Hate My Teddy'.  We thought the title was very interesting! Nobody in Willow class hated their teddy!

The children in the story were boasting that their teddies could do different things like talk, count, sing and even fly!  It was funny at the end because we found out what the teddies could really do!

Willow Class gave this book a big thumbs up!
